What Is a Rock Sack?
A rock sack is a small, tough pouch you fill with a rock and use to throw your line over a high branch. It is the unsung hero of a clean bear hang. Toss the weighted sack, feed your line, and you are halfway to keeping your food safe for the night.
How the PCT Hang Works
The PCT method is the gold standard for hanging food without leaving a rope tied to the tree. You throw your line over a branch, clip your food bag on, haul it up, then lock it off with a toggle so it hangs 10 to 12 feet up and at least 4 feet from the trunk. It is simpler than it sounds, and our step-by-step PCT method guide shows you exactly how.
Building a Bear Hang Kit
A complete hang system is a rock sack, enough throw line to clear a tall branch, a carabiner or toggle to lock it off, and of course a bear bag or food bag to hang. Buy the pieces together and you will never be caught at camp missing a part.
Bear Hang Kit FAQ
How much line do I need? Aim for at least 40 to 50 feet so you can clear a high branch and still reach the ground with both ends.
What goes in the rock sack? A rock, a pinecone, or anything heavy enough to carry the line over the branch. Empty it before you pack up.
Will this work in grizzly country? Many grizzly areas require a hard-sided canister by law. Always check local regulations, and use a hang where it is allowed.
Where is it made? Cut and sewn by hand in our USA shop, same as the rest of our gear.
